D.H. Lawrence, speaking of the Hopi Snake Dance and its ancient animistic roots, wrote that the Hopis' only command was "Thou shalt acknowledge the wonder." I think that's maybe a commandment in doing art -- that we look carefully around us and "acknowledge the wonder".
