I am a santera, painter of retablos, religious imagery of early settlers of the Spanish colonial period of New Mexico. I have researched all aspects of this art form. Retablos are painted on wood; bultos are carved wooden statues and a reredo is a group of retablos used as an altar screen. These three types of art are known as santos. The maker of this type of art is known as a santero or a santera.
